Aretec President Roby Luna has been approved by the Rhode Island Senate to become a member of the newly formed Board of Trustees at the University of Rhode Island.
Luna, a 2004 URI graduate, joins 16 other members appointed by Governor Gina Raimondo and approved by a Senate vote on January 29. Raimondo, along with the Rhode Island General Assembly, created the oversight board and included it as part of this year’s state budget.
According to a URI press release, “the board will oversee employment, and the University’s property, purchases and procurement. The University president will report to the Board of Trustees.”
The release goes on to say, “the University will join its peer and competitor institutions that have governing bodies solely dedicated to the success of their missions and that focus on higher education trends and best practices for their public research universities.” Also, the board “will give the University more autonomy to develop education and research initiatives that are consistent with a public flagship research institution.”
Luna joins other distinguished members of the board including former President and CEO of CVS, Thomas Ryan ’75 H’99, and Michael D. Fascitelli, ’78 H’08, founder of MDF Capital, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Imperial Companies.
In a statement regarding the formation of the board, URI President Dr. David M. Dooley notes the list of members “represents diverse backgrounds and brings valuable expertise and experience to governance of the University.” Dooley adds that the board “epitomizes the increasing national prominence and global presence of the University of Rhode Island and its growth in student success, enrollment, and research.”
The board is active as of February 1, 2020.
